The Bridging Project
Links with Primary Schools - ‘The Bridging Project’
S.W.H.S. along with local primary schools has pioneered ‘The Bridging Project’. The main objective of the project is to ensure that the transfer from primary schools to South Wirral High is a smooth and enjoyable experience for your child.
Year 6 staff in the primary schools work with S.W.H.S. staff to produce schemes of work and resources around a particular theme. On some occasions joint visits to local places of interest have supported the theme.
Students start work on the theme in the last term of their primary school and continue with it in a variety of subjects in their first term at S.W.H.S. This involves primary and secondary staff visiting each other often, with secondary teachers having an opportunity to get to know the children before they start South Wirral in September.
In September the students’ work, done in their final term, is displayed in their new classrooms and in the entrance hall at South Wirral High School so that they can feel more at home and get a sense of continuity in their work.
Over the last few years we have prided ourselves on our ability to ease the transfer between the two phases of schooling, recognising that children can be very apprehensive about such a move. The work done as part of the Bridging Project has helped enormously in helping students to settle in, ensuring that the rate of progress does not slow and that students can continue to achieve without interruption.
