South Wirral High School prides itself on advising students in their choice of appropriate courses at Sixth Form. The enrolment procedure is an important part of this process.
All students in the Sixth Form at South Wirral High School study full time. Full time study consists of 3 or 4 A Level subjects, or their equivalent, as well as a combination of Private Study and our Enrichment programme.
Students wishing to study A Level courses must gain at least 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. Their choice of individual subjects may be restricted by particular entry requirements. These are outlined on each subject page later in this prospectus. It is not always necessary to have studied a subject at GCSE in order to undertake A Level. All students study 3 or 4 subjects at AS Level.
Other courses are available for students who do not have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. These are often combined with GCSE resits in English and/or Math's and Work Placements. It may be possible to study 1 AS level in conjunction with these courses.
Enrolment is undertaken after GCSE results are published. It takes the form of an interview, with a parent, to discuss courses. At this time each student is counselled in choosing appropriate subjects based on exam grades and also possible career choices.
All students begin their courses on a trial basis. Sixth Form staff monitor their initial progress closely and parents are invited into school around October half term time to discuss this.
All students will have an induction week at the end of Year 11, in July to prepare for the start of courses.
An interest and the motivation to work hard is essential and just as important as academic ability.
