Religious Education
Religious Education makes both an academic and spiritual contribution to the curriculum of South Wirral High School.
Key Stage 3
Students follow the Wirral Agreed Syllabus. They study Christianity and at least two other world religions. Students in year 7 approach the world religions thematically covering topics such as symbols, festivals and rites of passage. In year 8 they examine the religion of Christianity and Islam and develop an understanding of how Christians and Muslims put their faith into action –. In year 9, students explore the philosophical roots and ethical concerns of the world religions. This includes extended studies of ultimate questions, Holocaust, world poverty and fair trade. In the last term, students begin their GCSE course.
Key Stage 4
All students follow a GCSE course in the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. They study God and morality in year 10, looking at topics such as abortion, the existence of God and world poverty. In Year 11, they study truth and spirituality, looking at topics such as drugs and crime.
Throughout KS3 and KS4 the department delivers a course which is designed to develop students’ literacy, discussion and critical thinking skills. It is a subject valued by students across the school
