The Physical Education Department
In P.E. students are involved in developing knowledge, skills and understanding in a range of activities and sports. The programme gives opportunities to develop competence and physical development as well as appreciating the contribution that P.E. can make to a healthy life style.
The P.E. facilities include two sports halls, changing rooms, a fitness suite and a dance studio. Outside there is a large all-weather surface and football pitches. Facilities for tennis and rugby will be completed in due course.
KS4 (Years 10 and 11) - Students have the opportunity to gain the following qualifications by opting for PE at Year 10 and 11.
GCSE PE - Students are assessed in 4 practical activities, which are worth 50%. There is an analysis of performance component, which is worth 10% and a written exam, which is taken in Year 11 that is worth 40%.
BTEC First Certificate for Sport - Students are assessed in 3 units. The units are ‘Unit 1:The Body in Sport’, ‘Unit 4: Preparation for Sport’ and ‘Unit 6: Practical Sport’. There is no exam and students are assessed through the completion of written coursework assignments for each of the aforementioned units. Passing this qualification is the equivalent of two grade C’s at GCSE Level.
KS5 (Years 12 & 13) - Students have the opportunity to gain the following qualifications by opting for PE at Year 10 and 11.
A/S and A2 PE - Students can study PE at A-level. The course comprises of theoretical units in anatomy & physiology, sports psychology, the history of sport and contemporary and comparative issues in sport. There is also a practical component in year 12 and 13. Students are assessed through written coursework projects and in both theoretical and practical exams.
Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership - Students have the opportunity of enrolling on the Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership during year 12 and 13 in partnership with Everton Football Club. The course enables students to develop key skills such as organisation, communication and leadership. The course is of a practical nature and requires students to complete a minimum 10 hours voluntary work placement. Students will gain this experience through sessions at Everton FC’s Mini-Kickers, primary school placements and year 6 transition projects such as the top-link sports festival.
These clubs focus on participation and enjoyment and are inclusive for all students.
The extra-curricular clubs take place at lunch times and after school giving all students an opportunity to take part.
The department offers extra-curricular opportunities in the following sports,
football, rugby, netball, basketball, badminton, golf, fitness, gymnastics, trampolining, table-tennis, athletics, tennis, rounders, softball and cricket.
Inter House Teams – There are inter-house sports competitions for students in every year group. Students have an opportunity to represent their house in the football, rugby, basketball, hockey, netball, softball, rounders, and cricket teams. The highlight and finale of the inter-house sports tournaments is sports day.
South Wirral Sports Teams - There are elite pathways for our students. The school has football, rugby, netball, basketball, badminton, golf, gymnastics, athletics, tennis, rounders, softball and cricket teams. The school has inter-school fixtures and competitions against other schools in Wirral and Merseyside for the aforementioned sports. There are more opportunities for students to be part of a school sports teams than ever before.
The school has links with the following clubs: Everton Football Club, Tranmere Rovers Football Club, Sale Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC), Cheshire Jets Basketball Team
Wirral Rugby Club, Port Sunlight Rugby Club, New Brighton Rugby Club and Old Anselmians Rugby Club, Bromborough Bull Dogs (Basketball for Boys and Girls)
We are always looking to strengthen links with other community sports clubs and would welcome interest from any other sports clubs that would like to establish a link with the school.
The PE department offers students the experience to watch professional athletes in a variety of sports. We regularly visit Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club as well as other big games at Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium. There are also visits to other top sports attractions in a variety of sports including football, basketball, tennis and cricket.
