The Music Department
Music is the awe and wonder of everyday life. It is an expression of who we are as people. Life without music would be a dull and boring landscape. Here at South Wirral we have a thriving music department with many opportunities for students to engage with the world of music and develop their skills in many areas both in and out of the classroom.
At Key Stage 3 we look at many different styles of music past and present from all over the world. There will be the opportunity to learn instruments and use ICT to compose. Just a small number of the musical styles include; rap, classical, pop, blues, Samba and African drumming.
We run GCSE Music at Key Stage 4. The course is an exciting look at music in a lot more detail. It is strongly recommended that you have prior musical instrumental knowledge and there are opportunities for these students to run their own ensembles.
There will be the opportunity to learn instruments and be taught by our peripatetic team of instrumental teachers.
Outside the classroom there is a rich variety of extra curricular activities that students are encouraged to take part in. We have our senior vocal group Cantare, which is open to students in year 9 and above. The SWHS Community Choir is open to all members of the school community and is non-audition. Simply come along and sing. Then there is ‘The Allsorts’ which is made up of our many instrumentalists. ‘Breakbeat’, our percussion group is also open to all.
We have two practice rooms and a recording studio in addition to the two large teaching rooms. S10 has 3 computer workstations and S11 has 17 workstations each with Sibelius 4 and Cubase SE. The recording studio runs Cubase SX. Both teaching rooms have a full complement of keyboards and classroom instruments.
We have a dynamic concert schedule including many school and community events. We have performed in a very wide variety of venues locally and nationally. In 2007 we will be going on a concert tour to Europe!
